What Makes a Move “Long Distance”?

In the moving industry, any move that covers more than 50 miles or crosses state lines is considered long distance. That means a move from Orlando to Tampa counts, and so does a move from Central Florida to North Carolina.

The distinction matters because long-distance moves are priced and scheduled completely differently than local moves. A local move is usually charged by the hour and done in a single trip. A long-distance move is quoted based on the weight of your shipment and the distance it’s traveling. The truck might be on the road for a full day or more, and the logistics of loading, driving, and unloading need to be planned out well in advance.

At Just Move It, as a dedicated long distance moving company, our professional movers handle long-distance moving services into, out of, and across the state of Florida. Whether you’re relocating from Central Florida to Atlanta, moving down from the Northeast, or heading across the state from Orlando to the Gulf Coast, our crew stays with your belongings from door to door.

How Long-Distance Moving Is Priced

This is the part most people want to understand first, so let’s get into the details of moving costs.

Long-distance moves are priced based on two main factors: the total weight of everything being moved and the distance between your origin and destination. The heavier the load and the farther it’s going, the higher the cost.

Here’s what goes into a typical long-distance quote:

Weight of the shipment. This is the biggest driver. A one-bedroom apartment might weigh 2,000–3,000 pounds. A three-bedroom house could be 8,000–12,000 pounds or more. We estimate weight during your in-home or virtual walkthrough and give you a number based on what we actually see — not a guess.

Distance. A move from Orlando to Jacksonville (about 140 miles) costs significantly less than a move from Orlando to Charlotte (roughly 530 miles) or New York (about 1,050 miles). Distance is straightforward — it’s calculated based on the driving route between your two addresses.

Packing services. If you want us to pack your home before the move, that’s an add-on. If you’ve packed everything yourself, it doesn’t factor into the quote. Either way works — some people prefer to handle their own packing to save money, and others would rather hand the whole job off to us.

Specialty items. Things like pianos, gun safes, pool tables, and oversized furniture may require extra labor, crating, or equipment to move safely. If you’ve got items like these, mention them when you call so we can account for them in the quote.

Unlike local moves where the final cost can shift based on how long the job takes, a long-distance quote gives you a fixed number. You’ll know what you’re paying before we load the first box. Request a free estimate and we’ll walk through your home to put a real number together.

What’s Included in a Long-Distance Move With Just Move It

Every long-distance move we handle includes the core moving services you need to get from point A to point B without the chaos of doing it yourself, ensuring a stress-free moving experience:

Furniture protection. Every piece of furniture gets wrapped in moving blankets and secured with straps. Anything that could get scratched, dented, or broken during a full day on the road gets the same treatment we’d give our own stuff.

Disassembly and reassembly. Bed frames, dining tables, desks, shelving — if it needs to come apart to move safely, we break it down at your old place and put it back together at your new one.

Loading, transportation, and unloading. Our crew loads the truck, drives it to your destination, and unloads everything into the correct rooms. For long-distance moves, the same team that loads your truck is the team that unloads it. Your belongings don’t get transferred to a different crew or shuffled between warehouses along the way.

Packing and unpacking (optional). Full-service packing means we bring all the materials — boxes, tape, packing paper, bubble wrap — and pack your entire home the day before or the morning of the move. If you just need help with the fragile and heavy items while you handle the rest, we can do that too. If you’re planning to pack yourself, our guide on packing tips for a Central Florida move covers what you need to know.

Floor and wall protection. We lay down protection at both locations so we don’t scuff up hardwood floors or bang up doorframes carrying furniture through.

One thing to know upfront: we don’t offer vehicle shipping or storage as part of our long-distance service. If you need your car transported or temporary storage between moves, we can point you in the right direction, but those are separate services handled by other providers.

Moving Within Florida vs. Moving Out of State

We handle both, and the process is mostly the same — but there are a few differences worth knowing about.

Moves within Florida (intrastate). These are moves that stay inside state lines but cover more than 50 miles. Orlando to Tampa. Orlando to Jacksonville. Orlando to Miami. These moves are regulated by the state of Florida, and Just Move It is registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as a licensed intrastate mover.

Intrastate moves in Florida are often easier to schedule on short notice because the driving distance is manageable in a single day. A move from Central Florida to the Gulf Coast, for example, can usually be loaded in the morning, driven across the state, and unloaded by evening.

Moves out of Florida (interstate). If you’re crossing state lines — Florida to Georgia, Florida to the Carolinas, Florida to New York, anywhere — the move falls under federal regulation through the U.S. Department of Transportation. Just Move It is licensed and insured for interstate moves through the USDOT.

Interstate moves require more lead time for planning and typically take longer to complete, depending on distance. A move to a neighboring state like Georgia or Alabama might be a one-day job. A move to the Northeast or Midwest usually means the truck is on the road overnight and delivery happens the following day.

In both cases, your quote is based on weight and distance, and the crew that loads your truck is the crew that unloads it. No brokers, no hand-offs, no wondering where your stuff is.

How a Long-Distance Move Works With Just Move It

Step 1 — Tell us where you’re going. Call us or request a free quote and give us the basics: where you’re moving from, where you’re moving to, and roughly how much stuff you have. We’ll set up a walkthrough — in person or virtual — to see your home and get an accurate weight estimate.

Step 2 — We give you a flat-rate quote. Based on the weight of your shipment and the distance, we put together a binding moving quote. This is the price you pay — no surprises at delivery, no “your stuff weighed more than we thought” upcharges.

Step 3 — We pack (if you want us to). If you’ve added packing services, our crew shows up the day before or the morning of the move and packs your home room by room. Everything gets labeled so it ends up in the right place at your new home.

Step 4 — We load and hit the road. On moving day, the crew loads the truck, secures everything for the drive, and heads to your new address. For in-state moves, delivery is usually same-day. For interstate moves, we’ll give you a delivery window based on the distance.

Step 5 — We unload and set up. At your new place, we unload everything, place furniture where you want it, reassemble anything we took apart, and make sure you’re settled before we leave.

Who Typically Hires Us for Long-Distance Moves

We see a pretty even mix of three scenarios:

People leaving Florida. Retirees heading to the Carolinas. Families relocating for work to Atlanta, Nashville, or the Northeast. Young professionals moving back home after a few years in Central Florida. We load in Orlando and drive it wherever it needs to go.

People moving to Florida. Snowbirds making it permanent. Families relocating for jobs at one of the hospitals, defense contractors, or tech companies in the Orlando metro. We coordinate pickup at your current home and handle delivery to your new place in Central Florida.

People moving across Florida. Orlando to Tampa is one of the most common routes we run. Orlando to Jacksonville, Orlando to South Florida — any move that’s too far for a local crew but doesn’t require crossing state lines.

If you’re moving into an apartment at your destination — whether that’s a high-rise in downtown Tampa or a walk-up in another state — our crew handles the same apartment-specific logistics we deal with on local moves: elevator reservations, narrow hallways, restricted hours, and the rest.

Veteran-Owned, Door to Door

Just Move It is based in Ocoee, FL and owned by Brian Green, a Marine Corps veteran who spent eight years on active duty before starting the company. Long-distance moves are where the military background really shows — the logistics planning, the attention to detail during loading, and the sense of urgency about getting the job done right.

We’re not a moving broker or part of large van lines. We don’t sell your move to whoever bids lowest and hope it works out. When you book with Just Move It, our crew shows up in our truck, loads your home, drives it to your destination, and unloads it. One company, one crew, one truck from start to finish.

That’s how we’ve earned over 250 five-star Google reviews — and it’s why people trust us with their cross-country moves, not just their moves across town.

What Our Customers Say

We’ve moved families from Central Florida to Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, New York, and beyond. The reviews tell the same story: everything arrived in one piece, the crew was professional, and the price matched the quote.

Frequently Asked Questions About Long-Distance Moving

What makes a move “long distance” in Florida?

Any move that covers more than 50 miles or crosses state lines is considered long distance. This changes how the move is priced (by weight and distance instead of by the hour) and what licensing the moving company needs to carry. Just Move It is licensed for both intrastate moves (within Florida) and interstate moves (out of state) through the USDOT and the Florida DACS.

How far in advance should I book a long-distance move?

Three to four weeks is a good minimum. If you’re moving during peak season — summer months, end of month, or early fall — booking five to six weeks out is safer. We’ve accommodated moves on shorter notice when schedules allow, but more lead time means more flexibility in choosing your exact dates.

What should I do to prepare for a long-distance move?

Start by decluttering. Every pound you ship costs money on a long-distance move, so this is the time to sell, donate, or toss anything you don’t actually want at your new place. If you’re packing yourself, start with rooms you use least and work forward. Label every box with the room it belongs in at your destination. And make sure your moving company has accurate information about access at both locations — stairs, elevators, long driveways, gated communities — so there are no surprises on moving day.

Do you offer insurance for my belongings during the move?

Yes. Basic liability coverage is included with every move. For long-distance moves specifically, we recommend discussing additional valuation coverage during your estimate, especially if you’re transporting high-value items like electronics, antiques, or artwork. We’ll walk you through the options so you can choose the level of protection that makes sense for your shipment.

What if my moving dates change?

It happens. Closings get delayed, leases don’t line up, job start dates shift. If your move date changes, let us know as soon as possible and we’ll work to reschedule. The more notice you give us, the easier it is to lock in a new date that works for both sides. There’s no penalty for rescheduling as long as we have reasonable lead time.
