Packing Tips to Make Your Move Trouble-Free

When it comes to moving, the right preparation can make all the difference. If you fail to pack carefully, you could arrive to broken dishes, damaged furniture and a host of other problems. If you take the time to pack carefully and label each box as you go, moving in to your new home should be fast and easy.

Here are some smart packing tips you can use to make your move as trouble-free as possible.

Pack Your Wine Glasses in Clean Socks

No bubble wrap? No problem! When it comes to packing, there are a few everyday items you can repurpose into the perfect hack. One of these is socks—clean ones that is—and what better way to pack your fragile glasses and stemware than by slipping each piece in before packaging them up for transport during transit. This will not only keep clinking at bay but also save money on bubble wrap and help prevent scratches as well from sharp corners on delicate glass edges.

Use Suitcases to Pack Your Clothes

Having a lot of suitcases and carry-on bags laying around the house might be annoying, but they can actually help ensure that your move goes smoothly. Use your suitcases to pack your clothes and your carry-on bags to store toiletries and other small items. You will have one less thing to worry about and more room in your moving boxes.

If you have a vacuum sealer, you can use the large plastic bags to store your out-of-season clothing and other items. If you are moving in the summertime, just pack your sweaters, scarves and other cold weather gear in a vacuum bag, suck out the air to compress it as much as possible, and stack it among your packed moving boxes.

Offer Unwanted But Useful Items to Your Friends

You will need lots of help when moving, so you will want to treat your helpers right. Pack a box with things you no longer need or want and let your moving helpers help themselves.

Color Code Your Boxes

Consider color coding your boxes to make both packing and unpacking a lot easier. Assign a color to each room before you start packing. Once you arrive, all you need to do is look for the right color and move each box to the spot where it belongs.

Document the Connections on Your TV, Computer and Other Electronics

It can be hard to remember where all those cables go, so do yourself a favor and document the information before you disconnect anything. The easiest way to do this is with your smartphone or digital camera. Just take a picture of the back of your TV or the area behind your computer desk.

When you start unpacking, you can simply refer to the pictures you took earlier to put everything back where it was. The few seconds you spent taking the pictures could save you hours of frustration later.

Be Sure to Document the Condition of the Property if You are Renting

If you are a renter, be sure to take plenty of pictures of the property after all your belongings are in boxes and on the moving truck. Having proof will make your life a lot easier if the landlord claims damage and tries to hold your security deposit.

Taking a little extra time before you move can make your post-move life a lot easier. Nothing can make moving fun, but the right preparation can prevent damage to your valuable property and help you get off to the best possible start in your new home.

Pack a Bottle of Wine

Make sure your bag of essentials includes a bottle of wine and a couple of glasses. You and the friends who helped you move can enjoy a refreshing drink once the boxes are all moved in.

Be sure to pack a corkscrew in your essentials bag as well. You may also want to pack a few snacks to get your post-moving party off to a great start.
